This palace is near the Palais d’Elysée (home of the French president), on the shopping street parallel to the Champs-Elysées. The 18th-century Parisian facade has a glass-and-wrought-iron entryway, where uniformed English-speaking attendants greet you. Hippolyte Jammet founded the Bristol in 1924, installing many antiques and Louis XV and XVI furnishings. The guest rooms are opulent, with antiques or well-made reproductions, inlaid wood, bronze, crystal, Oriental carpets, and original oil paintings. Each room is freshened every 3 years, and each comes with a luxurious bathroom with tub/shower combos. Personalized old-world service is rigidly maintained here — some guests find it forbidding; others absolutely adore it. In 2007 the Bristol was building an extension of the existing hotel, which will add to the room count, of course. Copyright
